The Story of Sophisticated Cat
The “I Should Buy a Boat Cat,” also known as the “Sophisticated Cat,” is a meme featuring a British Shorthair cat. The meme shows the cat with a pensive expression, often depicted sitting at a table with a cup of coffee and a newspaper, looking as if it’s deep in thought. The British Shorthair is known for its round face, chubby cheeks, and dense coat, which give it a distinguished and somewhat regal appearance.
In January 2005, singer-songwriter Björk released the music video for her song “Triumph of the Heart,” directed by Spike Jonze. The video features the iconic “I should buy a boat cat,” an anthropomorphic feline character. In one scene, the cat is shown sitting at a table, dressed in a blue shirt, drinking coffee, and reading a newspaper (as seen at 3:56 below).
