Tabby Cat Names

Tabby is the most common cat coat pattern in the world, and it is older than house cats themselves. The mackerel tabby pattern (the classic vertical stripes) is the closest living version of the wildcat ancestor's coat, going back to the African wildcat that was first domesticated around 10,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent. The tabby M-shaped marking on the forehead has spawned its own folklore, including stories that Mary marked the cat that warmed baby Jesus, and that the Prophet Muhammad's hand left the M when he stroked his cat Muezza.

This deep history gives tabby cats a much wider naming range than most coats. The literary canon is especially strong here. Hobbes (from Calvin and Hobbes) is a stuffed tiger but reads as a tabby in spirit. Crookshanks, Hermione Granger's half-Kneazle cat, is described in the books as a ginger tabby. Mrs. Norris, Argus Filch's cat in Harry Potter, is a tabby. From children's literature, Tigger (technically a tiger but the name has crossed over) and Garfield (orange tabby specifically) both work.

Tiger and tiger-adjacent names are the most direct route: Tiger, Tigerlily, Stripes, Tigger. From Sanskrit, Bagheera (the panther in The Jungle Book) and Rajah work for tabby cats with presence. Aslan (from The Chronicles of Narnia, meaning "lion" in Turkish) suits an orange tabby.

For mackerel tabbies specifically, the name Mackerel itself has become a low-key hipster pick. Striped fish names (Anchovy, Sardine) sit on the funnier end of the spectrum.

If you have a brown tabby, food and earth tones work: Toast, Cinnamon, Cocoa, Hazelnut, Maple. For grey tabbies, weather and metal names (Misty, Silver, Stormy) work without conflict.

One useful naming tip for tabbies: because the pattern is so common, the most generic "cat-coded" names (Whiskers, Tom, Tiger) read as defaults rather than choices when paired with a tabby. Picking a name that suggests something specific about the cat's personality or history will land better.
