Female Cat Names
Names for girl cats: elegant, cute, badass, or somewhere in between. The list spans Latin, Greek, Japanese, literary, and modern picks.
Female cat names have shifted noticeably over the last decade. The classic "cute and feminine" defaults (Princess, Daisy, Kitty) still work, but the dominant trend now is human-style names: Luna, Bella, Olive, Ruby, Penny, and Mia top most veterinary clinic name registries in the US and UK. Luna in particular has been the most popular female cat name in the US for several years running, according to data from pet insurance providers and registries like Nationwide.
If you want something with more weight, mythology is a deep well. Athena, Artemis, Hera, Persephone, and Hecate all suit female cats with presence. From Egyptian mythology, Bastet (the cat goddess) and Isis (goddess of magic) are both natural picks. From Norse, Freya (goddess of love who rode a chariot pulled by cats) is one of the most cat-appropriate goddess names in any pantheon.
For elegance, Latin and Italian sources are strong: Stella (star), Bella (beautiful), Luna (moon), Aurora (dawn), Nova (new). French gives you Chloe, Coco, Fifi, and Genevieve. From Japanese, Yumi, Mei, Aiko, Hana, Sakura, and Tsuki all work and have verifiable meanings.
Literary picks for female cats include Hermione (Harry Potter), Khaleesi and Arya (Game of Thrones), Luna (also from Harry Potter), and Hedwig. From classic literature, Dinah (Alice in Wonderland) and Mrs. Norris (Harry Potter) both reference real cats in the texts.
One thing worth knowing: cats do not respond to the gendered associations of names. They respond to the sound. Studies on cat name recognition (notably the 2019 Saito et al. study published in Scientific Reports) found that cats distinguish names by phonetic pattern, not meaning. Pick the name you like, regardless of how feminine or masculine it reads.
