Unisex Cat Names
Names that work for any cat. Nature, food, and classic picks that do not lean masculine or feminine.
Unisex cat names have grown noticeably in popularity over the last five years, partly because more owners are picking names before knowing the cat's sex (especially with adopted kittens or strays) and partly because nature-and-food names have come into vogue.
Nature is the strongest unisex category. Trees (Aspen, Birch, Cedar, Maple, Oak, Pine, Willow), weather (Storm, Frost, Sky, Cloud, Rain), and natural features (River, Bay, Brook, Forest, Meadow, Mountain) all work for any cat regardless of sex. Sage, Sky, and River have become especially popular in the last few years.
Food is the second strongest unisex category. Mochi, Oreo, Pumpkin, Peach, Cookie, Muffin, Pickle, Bagel, Donut, Toast, and Beans all work for any cat. The food-name trend started with cats like Mochi (a viral Twitter cat) around 2018 and has not slowed down.
From the modern internet, Bingus, Floppa, and Smudge all started as memes attached to specific cats and have spread as general names. None of them carry a gender association.
For something with more weight, several mythology names cross genders cleanly: Phoenix (the firebird), Echo (Greek nymph but the name reads neutral), and Sphinx all work. Saturn and Mars have male associations in Roman mythology but read neutral as cat names.
Short, punchy unisex names are some of the easiest to say and the easiest for cats to recognise: Pip, Boo, Bo, Jet, Sox, Tux, Ash, Fox, Bear. Cats respond best to short names with a clear vowel ending, and most of these check that box.
