The first is the formal-name-with-a-nickname approach: the cat is officially Bartholomew but called Bart, officially Penelope but called Penny. This gives you the full grandeur of the formal name plus a practical short version for daily use.

The second mode is the absurd-formal approach: the cat is named Lord Fluffington and is always called Lord Fluffington. The length is the joke. This works best for cats with significant personality or strong opinions.

For the formal-with-nickname mode, the best long names are ones with built-in shortenings. One thing worth knowing about long names: cats do not respond to them the way they respond to short names.
