Long Cat Names
Eight letters or more. Best if you have a nickname ready, but a long formal name (Lord Fluffington) is its own kind of joke.
Long cat names (eight or more letters) work in two distinct modes. The first is the formal-name-with-a-nickname approach: the cat is officially Bartholomew but called Bart, officially Penelope but called Penny. This gives you the full grandeur of the formal name plus a practical short version for daily use.
The second mode is the absurd-formal approach: the cat is named Lord Fluffington and is always called Lord Fluffington. The length is the joke. This works best for cats with significant personality or strong opinions.
For the formal-with-nickname mode, the best long names are ones with built-in shortenings. Bartholomew (Bart), Reginald (Reggie), Winston (Winnie), Wellington (Welly), Archibald (Archie), Bartholomew (Bart), Beatrice (Bea), Eleanor (Nora), Genevieve (Genny), Penelope (Penny), Octavia (Tavi), Seraphina (Sera), Anastasia (Annie or Stasia).
From mythology, the longer names tend to be the heroes and major figures: Hercules, Achilles, Odysseus, Penelope, Persephone, Cassiopeia, Andromeda, Bellatrix, Anastasia. Persephone for a black or mysterious cat is particularly strong.
From literature: Crookshanks (Hermione's cat), Mistoffelees (T.S. Eliot), Daenerys (Game of Thrones), Macavity (T.S. Eliot), Bartholomew, Hermione, Bagheera. Mrs. Norris is technically a name with a title but reads as a single long name.
From food: Marshmallow, Espresso, Tiramisu, Affogato, Champagne, Cinnamon, Camembert, Crumpet. These tend to suit cats with personality more than reserve.
For absurd-formal compound names, the formula is title plus fluffy descriptor: Lord Fluffington, Sir Whiskers, Captain Fuzzy, Lady Paws, Doctor Whiskerbottom, Professor McSnuggles. The more pompous the better.
One thing worth knowing about long names: cats do not respond to them the way they respond to short names. The Saito et al. 2019 study on cat name recognition specifically noted that cats parse names by phonetic pattern, and longer names with multiple syllables take longer to register. If you choose a long formal name, plan to use the nickname for actual calling. Save the formal version for vet appointments and Christmas cards.
