The Story of Big Floppa

Big Floppa's real name is Gregory, or Gosha in Russian. He is a caracal, a medium-sized wild cat with oversized tufted ears. Born on December 21, 2017 at a cattery in Kyiv, Ukraine, he was purchased at four months old by Andrey and Elena Bondarev for $8,000. He has lived with them in Moscow ever since.

The Bondarevs share Gosha's life on Instagram under the account @prozhony. He lives alongside their housecats Zhora, Matvey, and a Maine Coon named Justin. Gosha loves to "talk" back when his owners growl at him, and he sleeps in their bed at night, always protective of Elena.

In December 2019, a photo of Gosha lying on a windowsill with Zhora was posted to Instagram. Ironic meme accounts picked it up, first calling him "big sahnr" before Instagram user young.taxi coined the name "Big Floppa" in January 2020. The name stuck. By mid-2020, Floppa had become one of the defining animal memes of the pandemic era, with cursed edits, low-poly 3D renders, and absurd captions flooding every platform.

In Russian-speaking internet circles, he is known as Bolshoy Shlyopa. A rivalry meme with Bingus, another 2020 cat meme, became a running joke across Reddit and Instagram. Gosha himself remains unbothered by all of it. He is just a very large cat who lives indoors like any house pet, unbending in his refusal to acknowledge his own fame.
