The Story of maple.cat

Maple’s story started in November 2017, when his family welcomed him home as their second British Shorthair kitten. His owner had originally been looking for a companion for their first cat, Lily, and after months of research, she fell in love with Maple. He joined the family at around five months old.

What started as a simple Instagram diary quickly became something much bigger.

According to Maple’s official website, the fourth photo ever uploaded to @maple.cat went viral across Reddit’s r/aww, Twitter, Facebook, Weibo and other platforms. The photo began trending around the world and even became a meme. Maple gained more than 5,000 Instagram followers during his first week.

His popularity continued to grow because of his extremely photogenic appearance and his calm, affectionate personality. Maple became known for his golden fluffy coat, round face, adorable poses and cute costumes. Today, his account is followed by hundreds of thousands of people, and he has also appeared in viral content on platforms beyond Instagram.

Maple lives in Southern California with his feline family. His official website identifies Lily and Dahlia as his British Shorthair companions, while the wider family social presence includes other cats as well.

Maple is also known for being unusually gentle and well-trained. His official FAQ says he follows his humans around the house, greets guests at the door and can perform tricks such as shake, high-five, sit, stand, boop and giving two paws. His family trained him with clicker training from an early age.

The name Maple was chosen partly because his golden coat reminded his family of the warm color of maple, and because they wanted to continue a plant-based naming theme.
