The Story of Smudge the Cat

Smudge is a white rescue cat who lives in Ottawa, Canada with his owner Miranda Stillabower. She adopted him around 2014 when he was already a few years old. He has always had anxiety issues and strong opinions about dinner seating arrangements. If he does not get his own chair at the table, he will meow through the entire meal or steal someone else's seat.

In June 2018, a guest left their chair at dinner and Smudge immediately claimed it. A plate of salad sat in front of him. He stared into the distance with visible disdain. Stillabower's brother's girlfriend snapped the photo. Stillabower posted it to Tumblr with the caption "he no like vegetals" and it picked up about 50,000 notes over the next year.

On May 1, 2019, Twitter user @MISSINGEGIRL paired the Smudge photo with a screenshot of Taylor Armstrong crying and pointing from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. The combination became "Woman Yelling at a Cat," one of the most-used memes of 2019 and the entire decade. The format works because Smudge looks genuinely unbothered by the fury directed at him.

Smudge's Instagram (@smudge_lord) grew past 1.4 million followers. Stillabower sells merchandise and has partnered with local cat rescue Furry Tails. He lives with fellow cats Valiant and Pippin and a dog named Aria. He still insists on his chair at dinner.
