Zhang told Tubefilter that the family started with Puff's mother, Chocolate, who later had a litter of six. During the 2020 pandemic shutdown, restaurants were closed and the family cooked at home. Puff kept showing up in the kitchen.
Zhang began posting short clips to TikTok in July 2020. The name That Little Puff was styled after the Twitter handle of actor Daniel Wu, a family favorite. In the videos, Puff appears to chop fruit, run a blender, and plate drinks. Zhang said they use props, including fake little paws, and that they wait if Puff is not camera-ready. A single clip can take about three hours to film.
The TikTok account grew first. Zhang then cross-posted to YouTube Shorts. Social Blade lists the YouTube channel as created on 29 August 2020. As of 2026 it shows about 38.6 million subscribers. CreatorDB lists about 32.1 million TikTok followers and about 2.6 million on Instagram at @thatlittlepuff.
Lynch and Ming turned the channel into a company, Puff Media. A Parsons School of Design profile says Lynch was born in Canton, China, studied architecture, finished a master's at Parsons, and co-founded the firm with Ming.
