The Story of Coffee aka Mr. White: The White Cat Who Beat Cancer

At first glance, Coffee looks like the kind of cat who was simply born to be famous.

With his fluffy white fur, bright blue eyes, round face, and slightly shy personality, Coffee — better known online as Mr. White — quickly became one of the most recognizable cats on Instagram. But behind those adorable photographs is a much deeper story about adoption, illness, family, and survival.

Coffee is a British Shorthair and is known on Instagram as @white_coffee_cat. His family says he was adopted when he was just five months old, after a friend could no longer take care of him. Pookie Methachittiphan and her sister Ping welcomed him into their home and soon created an Instagram account to share his photos with the world.

At the time, nobody could have imagined just how important that Instagram account would eventually become.

A New Home for Coffee

Coffee’s story began with a second chance.

When Pookie and Ping adopted him at five months old, Coffee was still a young kitten. His new family immediately fell in love with his distinctive appearance and personality. According to his family, Coffee was handsome, affectionate, and somewhat shy.

They started posting pictures of him online, and people quickly noticed something special about the fluffy white British Shorthair.

His huge eyes, round face, white coat, and adorable expressions made him incredibly photogenic.

Little by little, Coffee aka Mr. White began attracting thousands of fans.

But his life was about to change in a way that nobody expected.

The Day Everything Changed

In April 2016, Coffee’s family noticed something unusual while brushing him.

They felt two symmetrical lumps on his body.

Instead of waiting, they took Coffee to the veterinarian the very next morning. X-rays revealed that both of his kidneys were enlarged. Further testing and an ultrasound eventually showed the devastating diagnosis:

Coffee had kidney lymphoma.

For his family, the news was heartbreaking.

Just days earlier, Coffee had been a healthy young cat. According to his family, he became seriously ill only one day after receiving the diagnosis. They immediately took him to an oncologist, and Coffee began chemotherapy that same day.

Coffee’s Fight Against Cancer

The beginning of treatment was extremely difficult.

Coffee’s first chemotherapy sessions caused nausea, and his family watched him become very sick. They were suddenly forced to think about something no pet owner wants to consider: Coffee’s quality of life.

His family has described a deeply emotional moment during this period, when they considered whether they should continue treatment or let him go.

But Coffee kept fighting.

His family decided to continue chemotherapy and do everything they could to keep him comfortable. He was given fluids, medication to control nausea, and medicine to help stimulate his appetite when he stopped eating.

The treatment continued over time, with his final chemotherapy sessions given approximately once a month.

Then came the news everyone had been hoping for.

Coffee Was Declared Cancer-Free

After completing his chemotherapy program, Coffee’s oncologists told his family that he was cancer-free.

For Coffee’s family and the people who had followed his journey online, it was an incredible moment.

His story was no longer simply about a cute Instagram cat.

It had become the story of a cat who had gone through a serious illness and survived.

A 2020 profile of Coffee also reported that he had gone through about a year of chemotherapy and had entered remission.

The Internet Helped Coffee Fight

Coffee’s Instagram account played an unexpected role during his illness.

As people learned about his condition, his online community supported the family financially to help with his medical expenses. Coffee’s family later said that the support they received from the online community deeply touched them.

For his family, the experience highlighted three things they considered especially important:

Love, food, and community.

Coffee’s journey eventually became one of the reasons his family became passionate about pet nutrition and animal welfare.

His story inspired the family behind Love, Nala, the cat-food brand associated with Nala Cat and the wider pet family.

From Cancer Survivor to Internet Celebrity

While Coffee was fighting for his life, his Instagram account continued to grow.

His unique appearance made him instantly recognizable. Fans loved his bright eyes, white fur, round face, and funny expressions.

Over the years, @white_coffee_cat became a major cat account, and Coffee became known around the world as Mr. White.

His photographs often show him posing for the camera, wearing colorful collars, sitting with his fellow pets, or simply staring into the camera with his unmistakably serious expression.

That combination of beauty and personality turned Coffee into one of the most recognizable famous Instagram cats.

Coffee and Nala Cat

Coffee is also connected to another famous internet cat: Nala Cat.

Coffee and Nala are part of the same family, and the official Love, Nala website features both cats as members of the family.

The family has also described how Nala seemed to sense that something was wrong with Coffee during his illness. According to their account, she could tell that her brother was not well.

Their relationship became another memorable part of Coffee’s story.

Coffee’s Life Today

Coffee’s story does not simply end with his recovery from kidney lymphoma.

The current Love, Nala family page describes Coffee as a kidney-cancer survivor and says that he is battling nasal lymphoma. Because this is a current statement from Coffee’s family rather than an independent veterinary report, it is best to attribute the information to them.

That makes Coffee’s journey even more remarkable.

From being re-homed as a kitten, to becoming an Instagram celebrity, to surviving kidney lymphoma and continuing to live with his family, Coffee has had an extraordinary life.

Why Coffee aka Mr. White Is So Special

There are millions of cats on the internet, but only a few become truly unforgettable.

Coffee is one of them.

People initially followed him because he was adorable. They stayed because his personality was impossible to ignore. And many became emotionally invested after learning about his battle with cancer.

His story shows that an internet-famous cat can be more than a collection of cute photographs.
