The Story of Fedya

Fedya is a grey rescue cat from the Rostov Oblast region of Russia. He was born on August 27, 2020 and found as a sickly kitten in the garden of Natalya Zhdanova in the town of Salsk. He was born with a coordination disorder that made it difficult for him to move, and Natalya initially feared he might not survive. A neighbour's cat named Krasavchik became his guardian, teaching him basic cat skills.

Fedya's defining feature is his permanently crossed eyes and wide, startled expression. He looks perpetually surprised, as if he has just witnessed something he cannot explain. This cartoon-like face caught the attention of social media users when Natalya began posting photos and videos on Instagram in 2021. International media picked up his story, with coverage in The Telegraph, Japanese outlets, and Russian news.

By 2026, Fedya has nearly two million followers across platforms. His account @fedja_kot documents his daily life: meditating in front of spinning objects, getting stuck under furniture, and staring at things with maximum confusion. Despite his internet fame, what makes Fedya's story unusual is where the money goes. All income from his popularity funds a local animal shelter that cares for around 50 homeless cats.

Natalya has described Fedya as "naive and clumsy as a child." He lives alongside other rescued animals and has never outgrown his wide-eyed bewilderment at the world around him.
